NORTHERN NIGERIA INTERNAL SECURITY SITREP- Week Ending 23 December 2017

Situation North East (Adamawa, Borno and Yobe States)

20 December

NAF ISR platforms identified suspected enemy activities in the vicinity of TUMBUN RAGO,  North BORNO State bordering Lake CHAD, suspected to be housing elements of the AL BARNAWI Boko Haram faction

The Army reported that 8 Div supported by NAF ISR, close air support and interdiction had been conducting Op Deep Punch 2 in the Lake Chad Basin for 2 weeks using air and artillery strikes on the Lake Chad islands. Enemy casualties thus far in the operation were 20 enemy dead, 17 captured and over 100 elderly men, women and children liberated, who had apparently been used as conscripted labour. Troops captured 1 x Mercedes Benz truck, 3 x Toyota Land Cruisers, 5 x AK 47s, 3 x FN FALs, 2 x G3s, 1 x pump action shotgun, 1 x RPG tube, 2 x RPG rounds, 2 x VHF radios, 1 x Night Vision goggles, 55 x 5.56mm rounds, 5 x Bangalore torpedoes, 2 x 120mm mortar bombs, 1,000 x 7.62mm (NATO) link, 55 x 7.62mm, 108 x 12.7mm, 2 x memory cards, 2 x hydraulic jacks and 1.5A battery. The only friendly casualties thus far had been 6 wounded.

The NIGERIA Customs Service stated that 26 Customs Officers had been killed in BORNO and YOBE States, with only Border posts in GEIDAM, YOBE State and GAMBORU, BORNO State functioning (the latter partially)

The YOBE State Government has agreed to purchase 20 x Toyota Hilux vehicles for N350m for different security agencies in the State

An 8 Div Press Release stated that a 2 week operation on the Lake CHAD islands with 8 Div and The Armed Forces Strike Group, supported by air and artillery had cleared several islands and villages such as ARENA CHIKI, CHIKUN GUDU, ARENA WAJE, SA’ADA and JUWE, BORNO State killing 20 enemy and capturing 17. 100 elderly men, women and children were rescued, who were allegedly forced labourers on enemy farms. 1 x Mercedes Benz truck, 2 x Toyota Landcruisers with weapons mounted, 2 x Toyota Hilux, 1 x AAA gun, 5 x AK 47, 3 x FN FAL, 2 x G3, 1 x pump action shotgun, 1 x RPG launcher, 2 x RPG rounds, 2 x VHF radios, 1 x NVG goggle, 55 x 5.56mm rounds, 5 x Bangalore torpedoes, 2 x 120mm mortar bombs, 1,000 x 7.62mm link, 55 x 7.62mmm, 108 x 12.7mm rounds, 2 x memory cards. 6 soldiers were wounded

21 December

NAF aircraft patrolling NUMAN and DEMSA LGA, ADAMAWA State were allegedly fired on by suspected nomadic gunmen. Allegedly the Alphajet identified a large crowd of gunmen with a herd of cattle burning villages. The gunmen engaged the aircraft with small arms which then fired warning shots when they got to a bridge heading to JAINGO, TARABA State

NAF Fighter Ground Attack (FGA) aircraft conducted a series of air strikes on the suspected enemy positions identified in TUMBUN RAGO. Attack Helicopter (AH) gunships conducted follow up strikes on fleeing suspected enemy

Suspected Fulani gunmen attacked BILACHI, FUFORE LGA, ADAMAWA State around 7.00pm killing 1 person, wounding one other and burning the village

22 December

Elements if 121 Bn and 21 Bde ambushed suspected enemy fighters at one of their suspected crossing points in FIRGI, BAMA LGA, BORNO State, killing 1 capturing a gas cylinder, 2 x water bottles and 1 x motorcycle.

The NAF conducted air strikes with an unspecified platform on a enemy concentration south east of BOGUMERI, BORNO State after trailing a convoy of motorcycles to the location

23 December

Elements of 3Bn, 22Bde conducted a fighting patrol towards MAKANDARI Village, KALA BALGE LGA, BORNO State following reports of suspected Boko Haram cattle rustling of over 200 cattle. Contact was made with the enemy in BENENRI Village, where 2 were killed and 1 x AK47, 2 x motorcycles and one ID card were recovered along with the cows

Situation North West (Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Sokoto and Zamfara States)

17 December

NPF attached to Op Absolute Sanity detained 2 suspected kidnappers who were allegedly operating in the vicinity of JERE/ KATARI axis of the ABUJA-KADUNA Road and JERE-KAGARKO Road, KADUNA State after a firefight around 9.30pm, recovering 2 x AK 47, 135 x rounds of ammunition

20 December

Farmers clashed with Fulani herdsmen in GIROMASA, BAGUDO LGA, KEBBI State resulting in 2 farmers killed, following a court decision in favour of the Herdsmen over a river

21 December

The DSS announced it had rescued a 3 year old boy abducted and held hostage for 11 days in KANO, KANO State. The kidnappers had received a N200,000.00 on 11 December 2018 after asking for N20m

22 December

A gunman attacked a Christmas Carol Service in NINDEM Village Square, GODOGODO District, JEMA’A LGA, KADUNA State around 9.00pm killing 4 and wounding 8

23 December

The police have arrested 2 suspected robbers in SAYADI Village, WUSHISHI LGA, NIGER State

Situation North Centre (Abuja FCT, Bauchi, Benue, Gombe, Kogi, Kwara, Nasarawa, Niger, Plateau, Taraba States)

17 December

Gunmen ambushed a vehicle travelling from LAGOS to TAKUM in the vicinity of SATTI AGRIGI, KATSINA ALA LGA, BENUE State on KATSINA ALA- TAKUM Road around 10.00pm killing one of the passengers an Army Colonel

18 December

Elements of 707 Bn allegedly went on the rampage in KATSINA ALA Town in retaliation for the murder of their colleague by armed robbers, blocking the road and burning up to 20 houses in the Federal Low Cost Housing Estate and TOMATAAN District

President BUHARI extended the tenure of the CDS Gen. Abayomi OLONISAKIN, the COAS Lt Gen T.Y. BURATAI, the CAS Air Marshal Sadique ABUBAKAR and CNS, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ikwe IBAS. The period of extension was not specified

The GOMBE State Police Command paraded 4 people suspected of abducting a Nurse in October 2017. 1 x AK 47, 19 x rounds of ammunition and N200,000.00 were recovered from the suspects, 3 others remain at large.

19 December

Gunmen attacked GIDAN BANOBI, ZAZZAGA District, MUNYA LGA, NIGER State around 2.00am killing 1 person and abducting 3 women, one of whom was released to give relatives the number to call to negotiate ransom. The District head stated this was the 3rd attack in 72 hours and they had just gathered up N10m to ransom 5 out of 10 people already abducted

22 December

Gunmen ambushed and robbed travellers along UGBOKOLO-OWUKPA Road in the vicinity of OKPOGA, OKPOKWU LGA, BENUE State, police responded engaging them in a firefight, killing 1, fatally wounding another and arresting 2 more based on the confession of the deceased suspect

23 December

The Secretary of the BENUE State Emergency Management Agency stated that up to 10,000 people had fled from CAMEROUN to AKWAYA, KWANDE LGA

Gunmen attacked ODONTO Village, AKPA District, OTURKPO LGA, BENUE State killing 2 people

21 December

An Appeal Court in CAMEROUN reduced the sentence of RFI journalist Ahmed ABBA who was arrested in July 2015 and sentenced in April 2017 on terrorism charges. The terrorism charges were dropped, however the charge of failing to denounce terrorism was upheld

22 December

Gunmen attacked ZENEME, MAYO TSANAGA Department, EXTREME NORD Region at night killing 2 villagers

23 December

Gunmen attacked KERAWA MAFA, MAYO TSANAGA Department killing one person
