257 cleared Boko Haram suspects were released to BORNO State Governor Kashim SHETTIMA by MCCC Commander Maj Gen Leo IRABOR in commemoration of the Armed Forces Remembrance Day

NAF fighter ground attack and Attack helicopters attacked a suspected Boko Haram camp, 1 nm south of TUMBUM REGO, KUKAWA?? LGA, BORNO State, where enemy forces who attacked friendly forces at KANGARWA had reportedly withdrawn.

15 January

Elements of 119 TF Bn, 7 Bde discovered shallow graves of dead suspected insurgents with gunshot wounds reportedly inflicted after fighting on 13 January, in the vicinity of BAGA, KANGARWA and DOGON CHIKUN, KUKAWA LGA, BORNO State with 1 x 36 grenade and 1 x 12.7mm round.

The COAS Lt Gen BURATAI confirmed that no European was captured in the SAMBISA Forest, however a light skinned body was found after the fighting

16 January

2 x PBIED attacked at University of MAIDUGURI, BORNO State. The first a young female (approximately 12 years old) was spotted trying to climb over the fence around 5.45am at Gate Five by a MOPOL officer who shot him causing his device to detonate. The second a young male (around 7 years old) around 6.30am killing 5 people and wounding 15. in a mosque in the Senior Staff Quarters and the second detonated near the gates

A young female PBIED of approximately 12, was shot in BARA KARAYA Village, JERE LGA, BORNO State EOD disarmed the device

Boko Haram released a video with an Hausa language audio message by Abubakar SHEKAU claiming responsibility for the UNIMAID bombing

17 January

An NAF air strike on an IDP camp in RANN, KALA BALGE LGA, BORNO State around 9.00am killed 76 people and wounded 120, including Red Cross, ICRC and MSF workers and 2 soldiers

The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai MOHAMMED stated that negotiations were still ongoing to recover the remaining GSS CHIBOK abductees whist escorting members of the Bring Back Our Girls pressure group on an ISR flight from NAF YOLA, ADAMAWA State

The Army has offered a N500,000.00 reward for information leading to the arrest of suicide bombers or their accomplices in the north east

Gunmen mounted in 4 x vehicles and several motorcycles attacked RANN around 6.00pm but were defeated by elements of 3Bn in a 30 minute firefight with 15 enemy killed, 1 x truck and 1 x fighter were captured, along with 1 x GPMG, 3 x AK 47s and unspecified amount/ quantity of weapons

The Army Chief of Training and Operations (CTOPs) Maj Gen David AHMADU stated that the Army Small Arms Championship (NASAC) would take place in the SAMBISA Forest in March 2017, testing different weapon systems as well as the Roland SAM Missile system

18 January

The NAF stated that faulty intelligence from a foreign partner led to the air strike on the IDP camp in RANN

20 January

2 men mounted in a Keke Napep Tricycle took away the Caretaker Chairman of BAMA LGA Modu GUJA from his home on LAGOS Street in MAIDUGURI, BORNO State

Chairman KALA BALGE LGA, Babagana MALARIMA has stated that 236 people ‘had been buried’ after the accidental bombing of the RANN IDP Camp. He also stated survivors and families of the deceased would be asking for compensation from the Federal Government

21 January

The BORNO State Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General Kaka LAWAN stated that the caretaker Chairman for BAMA LGA Modu GUJA had been arrested not abducted for failing to honour a summons to the Sharia Court

Media reports state that Lt Col. T.J. ABDALLAH, CO of 151 TF Bn based in BANKI, BAMA LGA, BORNO State had been relieved of his duties due to comments made on a WhatsApp Group for the NDA 49 Regular Course in which he made ‘derogatory’ comments about the President and COAS between 15 and 17 November 2016 in relation to the death of his friend Lt Col UMAR, in which he complained about equipment and other issues

16 January

The NPF in KADUNA State intercepted suspected armed robbers in JERE, KAGARKO LGA, engaging them in a firefight, killing 3 and wounding and capturing 1. Also recovered were military style uniforms 13 others were arrested in BIRNIN GWARI during a stop and search operation

17 January

The Army Chief of Training and Operations (CTOPs) Maj Gen David AHMADU stated that the Army would conduct Ex Harbin Kunama II in April 2017 in southern KADUNA, BIRNIN GWARI LGA, contiguous areas of PLATEAU State, LAME BURA Forest in BAUCHI State and FALGORE Forest in KANO State

Gunmen attacked the convoy of the Emir of JEMA’A in the vicinity of SAMARU KATAF, ZANGON KATF LGA, KADUNA State around 8.00pm destroying 3 vehicles.

Gunmen mounted on a motorcycle attacked a relaxation spot in a market in SAMARU KATAF, around 9.30pm killing 3 people and wounding 5 before fleeing in the direction of MAYAYIT Village

KANO State Road Traffic Agency (KAROTA) officials clashed with members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) on ZARIA Road, KANO, KANO State

Gunmen mounted on 3 motorcycles abducted 4 people including the ISA LGA Finance Director along the SOKOTO-ISA Road, ISA LGA, SOKOTO State the victims are allegedly being held in the GUNDUMI Forest, GORONYO LGA and a N250m has been demanded

A man was robbed of his motorcycle, N40,000.00, cell phone and ATM card in ZANGON KATAF. He was rescued by civil defence personnel

Gunmen attacked a Fulani village ZANKAN, KAURA LGA, KADUNA State around 9.00pm killing a boy and wounding 5

Gunmen mounted on motorcycles attacked a vigilante meeting around 1.30pm in TSE IGBE Village, ABAJI Town, KATSINA ALA LGA, BENUE State killing 10 and wounding 1 other person

16 January

Gunmen opened fire on a vehicle travelling from AMAAFU to ABAJI, in the vicinity of TSE IGBE, KATSINA ALA LGA, BENUE State killing 10 people

Peace talks between Gbagyi and Fulani communities in BOSSO LGA, NIGER State overseen by Governor Sani BELLO, has led to the dismantling of IDP camps and the return of the displaced to their homes

18 January

A UXO grenade detonated after a child, found in and placed it in a fire in MADANA Quartier, KOUSSERI, LOGONE ET CHARI Department, killing a 13 year old girl and wounding 3 children

Gunmen on foot crossed the KOMADOUGOU YOBE River and attacked Nigerien forces in GESKEROU, DIFFA Region, NIGER Republic, killing 2 Nigerien soldiers and burning 3 vehicles, NIGER reportedly retaliated with air strikes
