Situation North East (Adamawa, Borno and Yobe States)

03 July

Elements of 119 TF Bn conducted clearance operations in KANGARWA, KUKAWA LGA, BORNO State. 118 TF Bn, 8 TF Div ambushed suspected enemy forces mounted on motorcycles as they retreated along GERERE Junction, KUKAWA LGA killing 4 and destroying 2 x motorcycles and capturing 1440 litres of petrol in 48 x jerrycans, 6 x motorcycles, 21 x 7.62mm (AK), 2 x AK 47, 1 x IED, 1 x Type 36 HE grenade and various drugs. 1 friendly vehicles and communications equipment were damaged in the firefight

04 July

2 x female PBIEDs were detected at 6.15am as they attempted to attack IDPs at a borehole on MARTE Road , outside MONGUNO, MARTE LGA, BORNO State, they were shot and killed, with their devices detonating and wounding 2 civilians. A third female PBIED detonated around 7.10am along MARTE Road, killing only herself

Elements of the MNJTF conducted ambushes in the vicinity of YOYO Village near KEKENO, KUKAWA LGA, BORNO State killing 6 enemy and capturing 1 x GPMG, 5 x AK 47, 6 x 60mm mortar bombs, 4 x RPG rounds, 2 x magazines, 21 x 7.62mm (AK) rounds, 1 x IED, 3 x detonators and 10 x motorcycles. 8 soldiers were wounded

Elements of 157 TF Bn, 7 Bde ambushed a suspect allegedly conducting a recce on their positions in BARWATI Village, KUKAWA LGA capturing 1x AK47, 59 x rounds of 7.62mm (AK), 1 x 40mm grenade, 3 x AK 47 magazines and 1 x set of webbing

06 July

Media reports state that an NAF Alphajet on a recce mission to DAMASAK, MOBBAR LGA was fired upon by enemy AAA guns in the vicinity of, KUKAWA LGA, BORNO State. It is not known if it was hit or damaged

2 male PBIEDs attacked mosques in DAMBOA, DAMBOA LGA, BORNO State. The first detonated outside DAMBOA Central Mosque after being prevented from entering entered the first mosque and detonated around 5.45am killing 7 people and wounding 12. The second

The NAF released footage of surveillance from an airstrike on an enemy camp between TUMBUM REGO and MALKONORY approximately 25km from KANGARWA, KUKUWA LGA, BORNO State taken with a Beechcraft ISR aircraft showing clusters of solar panels, which were destroyed by a an F7 Ni airstrike

The COAS Lt Gen BURATAI visited 119 TF Bn, 7 Bde at KANGARWA, KUKUWA LGA as part of his tour of operational units in the North East

08 July

The COAS Lt Gen BURATAI visited the new Army Special Forces School BUNI YADI, GUJBA LGA, YOBE State and stated that the MNJTFs current offensive was to clear enemy forces from the NIGER Republic, NIGERIA, CHAD, CAMEROUN borders. He also visited 214 Recce Bn, NGURU, NGURU LGA, YOBE State

YOBE State Governor Ibrahim GEIDAM stated the government had begun the process of returning 300,000 IDPs

Gunmen mounted on motorcycles and pick up trucks attacked 3Bn positions in RANN, KALA BALGE LGA, BORNO State with motorcycle borne IEDs, AAA guns and small arms around 5.00pm killing 7 people and stealing food and medical supplies. One MBIED succeeded in detonating next to a friendly vehicle killing the driver and gunner, 3 other soldiers were wounded in the fighting and 7 enemy killed, 9 more bodies were discovered during follow up operations and 2 enemy captured. 2 IEDs laid outside the town on the GAMBORU-RANN Road to were made safe by Army EOD, 1 x GPMG, 1 x RPG and ammunition were captured, whilst local residents fled to GAMBORU NGALA.

The SOKOTO State NSCDC Commander Babangida ALIYU stated over 850 personnel had been deployed in the state to secure Eid El Fitr celebrations

Alfred NELSON-WILLIAMS the Sierra Leonean Defence Attaché and his driver were released around 3.00pm along KADUNA-ABUJA Road. There was no response as to whether a ransom was paid

Suspected nomadic gunmen attacked KABENE SURUBU Village, KAURA LGA, KADUNA State around 2.00am but were repelled by villagers, they destroyed an ECWA church and abducted the Pastor Rev Yusuf MAGAGA and injured several others. They have allegedly demanded a N2m ransom

09 July

Media reports state that President BUHARI is to order an offensive to clear armed bandits from ZAMFARA State, with units and their equipment deployed to the state already

The IGP has deployed 50 policemen to LOKOJA, KOGI State for deployment around the State to tackle kidnapping and other crimes

Gunmen attacked vigilantes in OKPOGA Village, OKPOKPWU LGA, BENUE State around 1.30am killing 3. The attack is thought to be due to a dispute between EDUMOGA and OKPOGA Villages, after a suspected criminal from the area was killed by vigilantes

04 July

The NASARAWA State NSCDC Commander Lawan BASHIR KANO stated over 1,000 personnel had been deployed in the state to secure Eid El Fitr celebrations between Tuesday and Thursday

A clash between Fulani and Gwari tribesmen in LAMBATA Village near PAIKO, GURARA LGA, NIGER State over damage to farmland by cows resulted in 3 Fulani and 1 Gwari dead, 3 people were reported missing and some house burnt and property destroyed

The NDLEA arrested a 55 year old man based in JALINGO, TARABA State at one of their checkpoints in ALAIDE, GWER EAST LGA, BENUE State with 250 x shotgun cartridges concealed amongst food items, which he claimed to have brought in ONITSHA, ANAMBRA State for N45,000

4 fishermen captured 2 gunmen, with 1 x AK 47 in the vicinity of DARAK, Lake CHAD

04 July

Gunmen attacked GONORI, KOLOFATA Arrondissement, MAYO SAVA Department, EXTREME NORD Region killing 1 man, 11 people are missing

Approximately 50 gunmen attacked an MNJTF Command post in HOMEKA, between LIMANI and BONDERI, MAYO SAVA Department, looting several villages before being repelled. 1 soldier was reportedly wounded

Fishermen in TUMBOUN ALLI Village apprehended 2 x suspected Boko Haram members with 22 x AK 47s who were handed over to Sector 1, MNJTF, MAKARY, LOGONE ET CHARI Department, CAMEROUN

05 July

Boko Haram Daesh faction (ISWAP) released a 14 minute video documenting their 03June attack on BOSSO, NIGER Republic. The video featured images of AL ZARQAWI and AL BAGHDADI as well as the Preparation stage, Approach to target, Assault, Fight Through and Aftermath of the attack. The enemy approached in heavily overloaded pick up trucks and motorcycles, and then assaulted on foot supported by at least five weapon mounted pick up trucks engaging the base as well as Nigerian casualties. The base itself appeared equipped with at least 2 x Chinese made APCs, at least 2 x D 30 artillery pieces. Several vehicles including the APCs were then shown with large stocks of captured weapons including AAA guns, HMGs, rifles, multi barrel rocket launchers, RPGs, RPG rounds and mortar bombs, ammunition of various calibres, artillery shells etc. fighters appeared professional and relatively well equipped with webbing and personal weapons. They also seemed reasonably competent (although foot soldiers weapon handling skills consisted of less aimed shots and more volume of inaccurate fire), however gunners in the technical appeared to maintain a reasonable rate of aimed fire whilst the vehicles displaced several times to present a more difficult target, Once the bases is captured artillery can be heard coming in fairly close to the cameraman however there is no panic and he huge haul of weapons indicates the enemy had the presence of mind to load as many vehicles as they could as well as steal Nigerien APCs

Media reports state that satellite imagery from 28 May shows that NIGER Republic has 2 x Su 25s, 2 x Mi 24s, 1 x Mi8/17 and 2 x Cessna 208B ISR aircraft at DIFFA Airbase as well as new hangers, security fencing, gates, runway markings and other construction
