Situation North East (Adamawa, Borno and Yobe States)

20 February

Elements of 5 Bde QRF conducted blocking operations towards KEKENO, MILE 90, GUDUMBALI, KUKAWA LGA, BORNO State to interdict enemy supply lines, capturing 39 x motorcycles, 1,170 litres (39 jerrycans) of petrol. They then conducted a fighting patrol towards GAWALA Village, KUKAWA LGA and west of KUKAWA towards GUDUMBALI in order to block enemy movement towards KUKAWA but the enemy did not make contact.

Elements of 119 TF Bn conducted a fighting patrol in the vicinity of Lake CHAD to deny the enemy access to fishing

Elements of 157 TF Bn detained a suspected Boko Haram spy named as Mallam GONI (55 years old) at GARIN GIWA, KUKAWA LGA, BORNO State, who allegedly supplies fish from FISH DAM to CROSS KAUWA. He is being interrogated at 7 Bde Garrison, MNJTF

21 February

Vigilantes have detained a Boko Haram suspect BASHIR (aka BASHIR SARKIN YANKA/ BASHIR THE KING OF SLAUGHTER), who allegedly performed the role of ‘SHEKAU’ on some Bok Haram videos in KONDUGA LGA, BORNO State. His identity is yet to be confirmed

2 suspected Boko Haram spies Audu UMAR and Hassan UMAR were detained after allegedly infiltrating GWOZA IDP Camp, GWOZA LGA from PULKA, GWOZA LGA, BORNO State

The CAS Air Marshal Sadique ABUBAKAR commissioned the NAFs new Tactical Operations Centre, Flight line, access road and ammunition dump at 75 Strike Group, NAF YOLA, ADAMAWA State

22 February

The Minister of Interior Lt Gen Abdurahman DAMBAZAU (rtd) arrived in YAOUNDE, CAMEROUN starting a 3 day working visit to CAMEROUN and CHAD. He met Rene Emmanuel SADI Camerounian Minister of Territorial Administration and Decentralisation. He will meet his counterparts and visit Nigerian refugees during the trip. He is accompanied by the Inspector General of Police, Comptroller General of the NIGERIA Immigration Service, DG of NEMA, Solicitor general of the Federation and others.

23 February

21 Bde and elements of the MNJTF supported by Camerounian artillery fire, cleared KUMSHE and TALALA, KALA BALGE LGA, BORNO State, destroying an IED making facility, killing 20 enemy, capturing 6 x AK 47, 1 x vehicle with AAA gun, 1 x 60mm mortar, and 1 x dane gun weapons and ammunition and rescuing 250 people. 3 Nigerian soldiers were wounded by IED strikes on their vehicle, 10 other devices were cleared during the advance towards KUMSHE. A Camerounian military vehicle detonated an IED en route to KUMSHE killing 2 Camerounian soldiers and wounding 5. The enemy reportedly retreated from KUMSHE towards FATAKE, where a reported arms dump caught fire killing 3 enemy. On the advance to TALALA an IED damaged a vehicle and wounded 1 friendly soldier


Elements of 7 Div rescued 150 people at KODO

24 February

The COAS Lt Gen BURATAI met with the BORNO Elders Forum in the Military Command and Control Centre, MAIDUGURI, BORNO State, to discuss progress in the campaign. He stated that he had been given 3 tasks, to defeat Boko Haram and rescue all hostages, support the civil authorities in restoring normalcy

The CAS Air Marshal Sadique ABUBAKAR stated that Research and Development had produced 500 units of Alphajet Bomb release pyro cartridges and the NAF had procured Harris Multiband radios and installed an ATR 42 SATCOM downlink ground station, completed Phase 1 of the migration of the Urban Communication System from Analogue to Digital in MAKURDI, YOLA and ABUJA, whilst addressing the maiden 2016 retreat for NAF commanders themed ‘Repositioning Priorities of Unit Commanders for Effective Leadership’

Gunmen attacked DIKWA, DIKWA LGA, BORNO State with small arms and a VIBIED apparently aiming for the IDP Camp but were defeated in an Army SF ambush killing 26 enemy, destroying 3 x VBIED, capturing 1 x vehicle mounted with a AAA gun, 1 x 12.7mm Dshk HMG, 1 x 12.7mm Browning HMG, 1 x RPG tube, 1 x GPMG, 4 x AK47, 3 x RPG bobs, 36 x grenades, 1 x smoke grenade, 8 x AK47 magazines, 236 x 12.7mm rounds, 396 x 7.62mm NATO and 101 x 7.62mm AK. One soldier and a vigilante was killed, 3 soldiers wounded as well as 4 IDPs. One military vehicle was damaged by the VBIED

25 February

Elements of 21 Bde brought 800 Nigerian refugees to BANKI, BAMA LGA, BORNO State from CAMEROUN

Several IEDs captured from Boko Haram detonated in JIMETA Divisional Police Station, JIMETA, YOLA, ADAMAWA State around 11.44am killing 4 police officers and wounding up to 6, when an officer allegedly went to move them. The explosion also damaged MAJALISA Primary School, injuring up to 20 pupils

Nigerien forces engaged gunmen in the vicinity of ABADAN, ABADAN LGA, BORNO State. Casualties and outcome are unknown

The COAS Lt Gen BURATAI visited 8 Div in GAJIRAM, NGANZAI LGA, BORNO State and inspected the road

26 February

The COAS Lt Gen TY BURATAI visited 7 Bde, Sector 3, MNJTF at BAGA, BAGA LGA, BORNO State and Army HQ Special Forces Battalion in GAJIGARAM, XXX LGA, BORNO State

Elements of 7 Div Garrison, 112 Bn and Army HQ Strike Group conducted a clearance operation in the vicinity of KOTOKUMA, DIKWA LGA, BORNO State, clearing an enemy camp with a medical facility, IED making facility, fuel dump, mechanics workshop, generators and several water points, destroying 3 x VBIEDs and killing 37 enemy. 12 x vehicles were captured, 27 x motorcycles, 9 x AK47, 2 x NR1 (FN FAL), 1 x sniper rifles 1 x improvised mortar barrel, handheld metal detectors, IED components, 4 x dane guns, solar panels and household items. 20 civilian hostages were rescued. 2 soldiers were wounded in the operation.

Elements of 121 TF Bn in conjunction with Camerounian forces cleared MARRABA, ANGWAN FADA, DALE and WIZHA BOKKO TIMIT, BOKKO NASANU and BOKKO HIDDE up to NGOSHE, GWOZA LGA, BORNO State rescuing 17 women and 28 children

25 TF Bde conducted clearance operations in the vicinity of GALMASKU, MULI, CHIRALIA, MAISANI, TALALA, AJIGIN, DALOMI and SHETIMALU, DAMBOA LGA, BORNO State rescuing 250 civilians

Elements of 21 Bde intercepted 3,000 Nigerian refugees returning from WAMBACHE, LIMAN and KODO FATA Villages, CAMEROUN back into NIGERIA, they have been moved to BAMA IDP Camp

27 February

The COAS Lt Gen BURATAI stated that MAIDUGURI-DAMBOA and DAMBOA-BIU Highways were open to the public under the protection 25 TF Bde, he also visited 254 TF Bn at SABON GARI along DAMBOA-BIU Road, as well as roads to MAFA, DIKWA and GAMBORU NGALA

The Army established an Army Combat Motorcycle Battalion at 25 TF Bde, DAMBOA, DAMBOA LGA, BORNO State stating they would act as a force multiplier and keep roads safe

Sgt Major Shehu IBRAHIM issued a statement to the NUJ in KADUNA, KADUNA State on behalf of up to 89 soldiers yet to be reinstated after being dismissed by Court Martial, saying they are still awaiting posting

Suspected Fulani herdsmen attacked a village in AYAMELUM LGA, ANAMBRA State killing 2 people

A Jukun man on a bicycle was attacked and killed with bladed weapons in IBI LGA, TARABA State

25 February

Suspected Fulani gunmen attacked ZANDO, WUSEN and GBORUCHA Villages, WUKARI LGA and IBI Town, IBI LGA, TARABA State. 5 people including an NCDSC member were killed in IBI and 4 in WUKARI LGA and 10 wounded. Locals state the gunmen operate form camps in GISHSRIN HASAN and TUNGA

2 Jukun women on their way to market in IBI LGA, TARABA State were attacked and killed with bladed weapons, 2 other women are missing

Unknown gunmen attacked a fisherman’s camp in SARKIN NOMA Village DAMPAR Ward, IBI LGA, TARABA State killing a family of 6
