Situation North East (Adamawa, Borno and Yobe States)

11 February

Elements of BIR and 26 TF Bde under command of the MNJTF began Op Arrow 5 to destroy enemy IED facilities and other concentrations along the border area, Camerounian forces attacked from KERAWA, MAYO SAVA Department in the East towards NGOSHE, GWOZA LGA, BORNO State  (approximately 15km from ASHIGASHIYA) destroyed 2 x enemy vehicles, 40 x motorcycles and killing several enemy in the break in attack. 1 x Camerounian officer was killed around 9.00am by small arms fire during the attack approximately 5km from NGOSHE. 121 TF Bn, 26 TF Bde advanced unopposed towards KIRAWA Junction, GWOZA LGA, BORNO State rescuing 8 men, 36 women and 68  children. The units met at PULKA, where the Camerounians handed over 2 x prisoners and assisted in counter IED road clearing operations

14 February

Camerounian elements of Op Arrow 5, withdrew from NGOSHE towards KERAWA upon completion of the operation which resulted in 162 enemy dead, 4 x IED factories destroyed, several IEDs captured, 5 x IEDs cleared and a large quantity of explosives, batteries, det cord, PBIED vests and detonators were captured. Also captured were 2 x 12.7mm HMGs, 3 x 7.62mm MMGs, 1 x RPG 7 tube, 12 x AK 47, 2 x unspecified firearms, several grenades, military style uniforms, several thousand rounds of unspecified ammunition, generators, motorcycles and motorcycles pumps. Several hundred hostages were released including 15 x Camerounians. A Camerounian vehicle detonated an IED in the vicinity of PULKA as they withdrew from NGOSHE to KERAWA killing Lt Col BELTUS (the BIR CO) and wounding 4 others

CJTF vigilantes detained 7 year old male mechanics apprentice in GWANGE 3 District, MAIDUGURI, BORNO State suspected of intending to attack DALORI IDP Camp, JERE LGA. He was detained with a suspected IED and several mobile phones. He stated that a man with several more IEDs had promised to pay him for the act.

A suspected VW Golf VBIED is being sought by security force in MAIDUGURI, BORNO state, the vehicle is thought to have entered the town via MAIDUGURI- DAMATURU Road

The Federal Government, World Bank, EU and UN have completed a 2 week Recovery and Peace Building Assessment mission to ADAMAWA, TARABA, GOMBE, BAUCHI, BORNO and YOBE States. The team led by Dr Mariam MASHA (Senior Special Assistant to the President on IDPs)

15 February

BORNO State Government has begun movement of 602 IDPs from GGSS YERWA to DALORI Resettlement Camp, in order to facilitate reopening of schools

Up to 30 gunmen attacked KUDA, MADAGALI LGA, ADAMAWA State on foot from MALAKWAYA Village near SAMBISA Forest around 9.00pm killing 6 people and burning up to 20 properties, displacing the populace to GULAK. Elements of 143 Bn supported by vigilantes and hunters pursued the attackers into the forest, the gunmen attempted to ambush the pursuers at MAGAR Bridge but were defeated losing 2 enemy killed, 3 soldiers and 4 civilians wounded. Troops captured 1 x Toyota Buffalo mounted with a AAA gun, 1 x GPMG, 1 x G3 rifle, 30 x 7.62mm NATO link

The ADAMAWA State Association of Hunters stated it had honoured 12 (10 men, 2 women) members for gallantry in operations against Boko Haram

A 254 Bn patrol cleared KUBWA Village, BORNO State capturing 2 x Boko Haram suspects in the village

A 254 Bn patrol fighting patrol to KORODE, DAMBOA LGA, BORNO State, cleared YAKSHARI Village off WAJIKORO along AJIGIN-TALALA Road capturing 6 x motorcycles and beans. 21 x motorcycles were captured in KORODE

A 113Bn patrol to NGWALA, BORNO State cleared NGORTA and ARITIMIE Villages, BORNO State capturing 2 x vans and 12 x motorcycles.

16 February

US instructors began a 12 week/ 3 phase training programme for the Army’s 145 Bn at the NIGERIA Army School of Infantry, JAJI, KADUNA State

Elements of 81 TF Bn and 251 TF Bn cleared enemy camps at KOMALA, DOLE, KUMSHI and MOADORI, BORNO State in the vicinity of ALAGARNO Forest killing 2 enemy and capturing 2 others in DOLE. Also captured were 2 x Toyota pickups, 40 x motorcycles, IEDs, food, fuel horses and donkeys

Elements of 81 TF Bn and 251 TF Bn conducted a night time ambush at two exit points from SAMBISA Forest at KOMALA and MUSAFANARI, engaging enemy mounted on motorcycles, killing and wounding several gunmen capturing 1 x AK 47, 1 x magazine with 9 x 7.62mm (AK) rounds, 6 x motorcycles, 2 x bags of salt and other foodstuffs and several IEDs

17 February

Elements of 7 Div Garrison, 112 Bn, Army HQ Support Group and Army Special Forces cleared enemy positions in GAJIBO, MAULA, GAMAI, GAMARE, MAIWA, WARSALE, TANGLI, TUSHI, SOWA, HASANARI, CHANGUWA, MALAMAJA and MARYA in MAFA and DIKWA LGA, BORNO State, killing 5 suspected enemy, capturing 1 x AK47, 10 x motorcycles and 1 x truck, rescuing 350 people including 5 Camerounian girls

GOC 7 Div Brig Gen Victor EZUGWU visited 26 TF Bde and commended 121 TF Bn for the successful joint operation with the Camerounians

Elements of 7 Div Garrison, 112 Bn and Army Special Forces cleared enemy positions in KWAPTARA, MIJIGETE, GARIN BOKA, MOSOLE, NGUBDORI, MA’ASA, DUKJE and GULUMBA in BAMA and DIKWA LGA, BORNO State, killing several suspected enemy, rescuing 195 hostages, capturing 2 x trucks, 180 x motorcycles, 750 x bicycles, 300 x cows, 200 x sheep, 130 x goats, grinding machine and 1 x 100 KVA generator A patent medicine centre and market were discovered at GULUMBA

Kashim SHETTIMA, BORNO State Governor stated that he was working on plans to reopen road links between MAIDUGURI and the rest of the state

The Army head of Civil/ Military Affairs Maj Gen Rogers Ibe NICHOLAS stated that Nollywood producers had approached the Army to make a film about the Boko Haram campaign, whilst at the premiere of the Nollywood movie ‘76’ which was filmed at MOKOLA Barracks

18 February

Commander MNJTF Maj Gen ADEOSUN visited MAIDUGURI, BORNO State, completing a tour of his AO, having visited Sector One (MORA, CAMEROUN), Sector Two (BAGA SOLA, CHAD) and Sector 3 in BAGA and sub Sector 3 (DIFFA, NIGER Republic) stating that the MNJTF was fully operational and would conduct more offensive operations

A UNICEF delegation headed by Ms Jean GOUGH visited Defence HQ in ABUJA, FCT, meeting Rear Adm Babalola EGBEDINA representing the CDS Gen OLONISAKIN who assured the delegates that the Army abided by the Law of Armed Conflict and looked after children in the conflict zone

The former CDS Air Marshall Alex BADEH has been moved to LAGOS, LAGOS State by the EFCC in connection to $930.5m alleged fraudulent arms deal

Media reports state that members 0f the Nigerian Armed Forces are attending Communication Courses run by the Joint Information Activities group at RAF, HALTON, BUCKINGHAMSHIRE, UK, in order to help them better engage with the public about operations against Boko Haram

19 February

CAS Air Marshall Sadiq ABUBAKAR commissioned Flight Line House, a Base Defence Coordinating Centre and Ammunition Dump and 4 other projects at NAF YOLA, ADAMAWA State and stated the NAF has restricted Boko Harams freedom of movement

Christian Aid released a report stating that there are high levels of food insecurity amongst IDPs in BORNO, ADAMAWA, GOMBE and YOBE State, with 1.2m people urgently needing water, sanitation and hygiene assistance

20 February

16 February

The Chairman of OTURKPO LGA, BENUE State and 3 policemen were shot in ONDO Village, UGBOJU, OTURKPO LGA around 8.00am following a disagreement between the Chairman Ijachi  UDE (an APC member) and his younger brother Eje UDE (a PDP member). Ijachi UDE was killed and the 3 policemen wounded.

Gunmen attacked KWALL Village, BASSA LGA, PLATEAU State early morning, killing 2 people, wounding 5 and burning some houses

18 February

Up to 30 suspected Fulani gunmen attacked OKOKOLO Village, AGATU LGA, BENUE State killing up to 5 people and burning several properties. The Police commissioner denied casualty reports but stated the clash was due to the Fulani’s going to recover stolen cattle.

The House of Representatives Committee on Police Affairs, Public Safety, National Security and Intelligence and Defence are liaising with the NPF, DSS and MoD to address the alleged influx of unidentified people into AGATU, BURUKU, GWER WEST and MAKURDI LGA, BENUE State

19 February

Unknown men reportedly burnt the house of a local chief and PDP member in EHICHO UGWU, OKPOGA, OKPOWU LGA, BENUE State leaving one man injured after they allegedly found electoral materials relating to the BENUE SOUTH Senatorial election in his possession

15 February

The KADUNA State Police Command has intercepted 33 bags of cannabis and 34 baskets of narcotics. They also seized 10 x Bacco bags of cannabis, 10 x cartons of narcotics and 17 x jerrycans of intoxicating acid and detained 150 suspects in KADUNA, KADUNA State

16 February

Unidentified men stabbed and killed a 67 year old Lebanese citizen in his house on UNITY Road, KANO Central Business District, KANO, KANO State. 4 people have been arrested in connection with the incident.

17 February

The IMN asked the KADUNA State Judicial Service Commission and Chief Judge to investigate Chief Magistrate Awal UMAR for ordering the arrest and detention of more of their members, allegedly without due process

18 February

KADUNA State Police Command paraded 15 people suspected of armed robbery, gun running and car theft and KADUNA State Command HQ, KADUNA. Police HQ. 6 suspected armed robbers had been killed and 1 x AK47, local and foreign made pistols, 1 x Toyota Camry, several phones, military and police style uniforms and amulets were recovered. The Police also stated that elements of Op Yaki had recovered 293 stolen cattle at GWAGWADA and other parts of the state

The KADUNA State Police Command arrested an armed robber from BAKARI Village in DUTSIN MA LGA, KATSINA State

19 February

The KADUNA State Joint Special Anti kidnapping Squad raided a suspected kidnappers hideout in KATERI, KACHIA LGA, following a tip off, arresting a suspect after an exchange of fire and rescuing 4 girls who had been missing for up to a week.

Camerounian forces and vigilantes from NGUETCHEWE attacked an enemy camp in the vicinity of ZAMGA, MAYO MOSKOTA, MAYO TSANAGA Department killing 12 enemy

13 February

Gunmen attacked TOUMBOUM KARE, HILE ALIFA Arrondissement, LOGONE ET CHARI Department, EXTREME NORD Region killing 13 people

14 February

A Camerounian vehicle leaving NGOSHE, GWOZA LGA, NIGERIA detonated an IED in the vicinity of KERAWA, MAYO SAVA Department, EXTREME NORD Region killing 2 and wounding 8 soldiers

Gunmen entered TOUMBOUM-KARE, HILE ALIFA Arrondissement, LOGONE ET CHARI Department, EXTREME NORD, at night forcing villagers to congregate and then executing 13 at random

The Somali President Hassan Sheikh MOHAMUD stated that Boko Haram fighters were trained in SOMALIA prior to returning to NIGERIA whilst at a security Conference in GERMANY

15 February

1 x PBIED detonated in BLABINE, LOGONE ET CHARI Department near FOTOKOL, killing one other suspected PBIED and 2 armed escorts. 5 devices were identified and defused on the second PBIED

An unknown group Ansar Al Nour released an audio recording in TOGO in the local Kotocoli Tem language, threatening attacks ‘worse than in MALI, SUDAN or NIGERIA’ if ‘anyone tried to undermine Islam’. The recording specifically mentioned Imam Totsi SOULEYMAN of TOTSI Mosque, LOME

19 February

Media reports state that CAMEROUN has received 2 out of 6 refurbished Mi-24 AH from RUSSIA, the first was reportedly received in mid February and is being assembled in DOUALA, LITTORAL Region, the helicopters will be reportedly be attached to BIR.

2 x female detonated IEDs hidden in cooking/ water pots in a market in MEME, MORA Arrondissement, MAYO SAVA Department, EXTREME NORD Region around 9.00am killing 24 people and wounding 52.
