  1. What accounts for Boko Haram resurgence. Recently, they released a video showing them repelling the Nigerian Army. Also, they have killed dozens of Chadian troops last week alone. Any particular reason(s)?

    • peccavi says:

I would not really describe Boko Harams recent actions as a resurgence. BH follows classic Maoist guerrilla principles and moved from terrorism/ guerrilla warfare to conventional warfare last year.
Whilst fighting in Nigeria they maintained supply lines and training/ logistics bases in Chad and Cameroun around Lake Chad and in Mayo Sava and Logone et Chari Departments particularly.
Their defeat earlier this year has simply pushed them from Nigeria back into these areas.
You will note that whilst attacks in Nigeria have dramatically decreased they have increased in Cameroun and these attacks generally take the form of raids for kidnap or raids for supply of food, fuel and cattle.
Thus in essence they are following the Maoist principle of ‘Uproar in the West, strike in the East’ (literally!) by conceding ground when pressed in Nigeria and attacking elsewhere.
I would suggest the IED attacks in Cameroun, Chad and Niger are ‘shaping ops’. Prior to Niger and Chad getting involved many Nigeriens and Chadians joined Boko Haram and many of their supplies came through there.
By striking at these countries it forces their governments to reconsider their strategy of joining the war and also operationally forces them to dedicate troops, police and intelligence to countering the attacks.

Even the IED attacks indicate the pressure they are under, there have been no VBIEDs for months and the PBSIEDs generally detonate at the periphery of their targets.
The volume indicates that there are strong functioning IED cells but the change in tactics indicates the freedom of movement they enjoyed before is severely restricted

I would suggest that the pattern of attacks supports this notion, I think there will be another attempt at a limited ground offensive when the rains stop to continue disrupting MNJTF and Nigerian ops
