Situation Friendly Forces

16 February

DHQ reports that MONGUNO and MARTE had been retaken. The 2 day operation cleared GABCHARI, ABBA JABARI, ZUNTUR, GAJIGANA, GAJIRAM, DAMAKAR, KUMAIWA, BOSSO, WANTI, JERAM and KABRISUNGAL and resulted in up to 300 enemy reportedly killed, 2 x friendly forces killed and 10 injured. Friendly forces captured several truckloads of rice and beans, 5 x armoured vehicles (2 x Streit APCs) , 1 x AAA gun (calibre unspecified), 50 x cases of explosive devices, 8 x machine guns, 5 x RPGs and 49 x boxes of varied ammunition. 300 x motorcycles and 6 x Toyota Hiluxes with weapons mounted were destroyed.

17 February

Nigerian soldiers cleared BUNU DARAM Village, KUKAWA LGA, BORNO State with and amphibious insertion via DOGON FILI through Lake CHAD near BAGA

18 February

Airstrikes by an unidentified aircraft reportedly killed 36 people and wounded 24 at a funeral in ABADAM, NIGER Republic. Witnesses claim there were 2 aircraft and bore Nigerian markings, the NAF has denied they were operating in the area, however media reports state that an NAF pilot mistook them for fleeing insurgents

19 February

The NAF conducted airstrikes in the vicinity of GWOZA, GWOZA LGA, BORNO State and the SAMBISA Forest

20 February

The trial of Aminu Sadiq OGWUCHE for the NYANYA bombing in April 2014 at the Federal High Court, ABUJA, FCT was adjourned to 6th March due to lack of an official interpreter. It is not clear whether the interpreter was for OGWUCHE or what language he needed translating to.

Residents in SONG LGA, ADAMAWA state report that leaflets written in English, Hausa and Arabic have been dropped from 2 x helicopters that appear to have been written by Boko Haram members apologising for their actions and stating they have been brainwashed. Residents state that the spellings appeared to be Nigerien and Chadian as opposed to Nigerian.

158 (62 women and 96 children) people abducted from KATARKO, GUJBA LGA, YOBE State who were released in January 2015, were allowed to re-join their families in DAMATURU, YOBE State after undergoing security screening and assessments. The women were given, 2 x bags of rice, sugar, noodles and wrappers, the 15 widows were given N50, 000.00 whilst 47 other women were given N30, 000.00. 20 boys abducted with them were still left with Boko Haram

21 February

Nigerian forces supported by air strikes recaptured BAGA, KUKAWA LGA. DHQ reports the operation began on Friday and the enemy used landmines (or IEDS) in 1,500 locations. 5 x AAA guns were capture, 34 x motorcycles and 5 x vehicles destroyed. Forces are also reportedly engaging the enemy in 12 surrounding towns GAJIGANA, NGAZE, NGENZAI, MARTE JUNCTION, MILE 90, KEKENO, KUKAWA, CROSS KAUWA, KANGARWA and AMIRARI

15 February

A female PBSIED detonated in Central Motor park, BAYANA in DAMATURU, YOBE State around 12.45pm, killing 13 (7 died on the spot, 6 in hospital) and wounding at least 30 The bomber boarded a bus and detonated her device after being reportedly dropped off by a car (which according to conflicting reports either sped off or was apprehended after the explosion and 3 men in military style uniform detained).

Gunmen attacked ASKIRA, ASKIRA UBA LGA, BORNO State burning down the Emirs Palace

Boko Haram released a statement via Twitter, threatening suicide attacks on any country joining the coalition against it

16 February

Gunmen attacked ASKIRA, ASKIRA UBA LGA, BORNO State around 7.30pm with small arms

17 February

Boko Haram released a video via Twitter featuring an individual referring to himself as ‘Shekau’ who threatened the upcoming election

2 x PBSIEDs detonated at MIRINGA Junction, BIU, BORNO State, around 9.00am, killing 8 people and wounding 9. The male bombers allegedly arrived on tricycles

Approximately 30 gunmen mounted on motorcycles attacked GAYA, FA’A and ZANG Villages, HONG LGA, ADAMAWA State with small arms killing 23 people in GAYA, 17 in FA’A and 10 in ZANG and burnt several properties

A PBSIED detonated outside AL AMIN Restaurant along DAMATURU Road near a military checkpoint in POTISKUM, YOBE State around 2.30pm, killing 3 and wounding 13.

Suspected nomadic gunmen attacked YANGAL Village, ZANGO KATAF LGA, KADUNA State around 11.00pm killing 8 people and injuring 11 others

18 February

A PBSIED detonated at a military checkpoint in YAMARKUMI Village near BIU, BIU LGA, BORNO State around 1.00pm. The 3 attackers alighted from a vehicle to undergo a search, until one attempted to detonate an explosive device but was shot by a vigilante, the vehicle also exploded killing 22 people and injuring 23, a follow on attack by gunmen in a vehicle from the western part of the town resulted 17 suspected insurgents killed.

Gunmen mounted in pickup trucks and motorcycles attacked TAMSU SHEHURI Village, KONDUGA LGA, BORNO State killing at least 12 people and stealing foodstuff and other items

19 February

Gunmen mounted on motorcycles attacked LADI SHEHURI Village, KONDUGA LGA, BORNO State, killing a man and burning him in his car before being repelled by troops from KONDUGA who killed 12 attackers

Gunmen mounted on motorcycles attacked GATAMARWA, MAKALAMA and LEHU Villages, CHIBOK LGA, BORNO State around 9.00am killing at least 30 people. The insurgents were reportedly attacked GATAMARWA market killing at least 10 people and then on to the two other villages stealing foodstuff and other goods, they were reportedly withdrawing from SAMBISA Forest and ASKIRA UBA but fled when troops deployed to the town

20 February

Gunmen attacked FA’A Village, HONG LGA killing 10 people, before being driven off by vigilantes who inflicted 2 x casualties sustaining 1 themselves.

15 February

Nigerien authorities detained ‘dozens’ of suspected Boko Haram members in ZINDER Prefecture at checkpoints on the roads leading to the city of ZINDER The suspects have been sent to an NIAMEY.

ANT detained 10 suspected Boko Haram members hiding in tunnels in GAMBORU, GAMBORU NGALA LGA, BORNO State during a cordon and search operation in the town. They were handed over to BIR

A Camerounian Police Inspector Abdulaye FARIKU was arrested in MAROUA, EXTREME NORD Region on suspicion of helping 2,500 Boko Haram suspects get Camerounian identity cards, He has been transferred to YAOUNDE.

16 February

Commander US Special Forces Brig. Gen. James LINDER stated that as part of EX Flintlock the US would leave communications equipment used for the exercise behind to aid the interoperability of computers, phones and radios amongst the allied nations

US AFRICOM/ African exercise Ex Flintlock began in N’DJAMENA, CHAD, with 1,300 troops from 28 countries. The 3 week exercise will feature at least 250 US troops training with troops from NIGERIA, ALGERIA, BURKINA FASO, CAMEROUN, MALI, MAURITANIA, NIGER, SENEGAL, TUNISIA, CANADA and the UK

The Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS) began an extraordinary meeting in YAOUNDE, CAMEROUN to discuss an effective fight against Boko Haram. The Leaders of CHAD, EQUATORIAL GUINEA, GABON, CONGO-BRAZZAVILLE and CAR were in attendance

Nigerien Police state they had detained 160 suspected Boko Haram members in DIFFA Prefecture.

Gunmen mounted in pickups and at least 1 x APC (From PMF Training School GWOZA) ambushed a BIR patrol in the vicinity of GNAM GNAM killing 5 soldiers and wounding 7 around 7.00am. They then attacked a Camerounian base vicinity of WAZA, LOGONE ET CHARI Department, EXTREME NORD Region. The attackers burnt and looted several properties before fleeing west after a 3 hour firefight, the Camerounians counter attacked with infantry and artillery fired into NIGERIA and claim 86 enemy killed.

The Camerounian Army stated that over 1,000 Boko Haram suspects were being held in MAROUA, EXTREME NORD Region.

Media reports state that CAMEROUN is using UAVs in the conflict in the north, the reports did not say who owned or operated the UAVs

The Council for Peace and Security in Central Africa (COPAX) has granted CAMEROUN and CHAD, 50bn CFA Francs (to aid them in their fight against Boko Haram. Camerounian officials state that the conflict has cost 640bn CFA Francs (76m Euros) in 2014

A male PBSIED was shot by Nigerien soldiers at a military post in BAGARA, MAINE SOROA Department, DIFFA Prefecture, NIGER Republic.

17 February

Nigerien Prime Minister Brigi RAFINI led a march in NIAMEY, NIGER Republic of several thousand people against Boko Haram

Gunmen attacked GABOUA Village, KOZA Commune, MAYO TSANAGA Department, EXTREME NORD Region, abducting 9 herdsmen and stealing their livestock, which they tried to take towards the border. They were intercepted by elements of BTAP in the vicinity of KOTRAY Village, near NGUETCHEWE, MAYO MOSKOTA Department, after villagers reportedly formed a roadblock. 7 herdsmen and 8 attackers were killed and 4 x AK47, 5 x 20l cans of fuel, 1 x motorcycle and 70 x oxen were captured.

Elements of the ANT from GAMBORU NGALA captured DIKWA, DIKWA LGA, BORNO State around 7.00am supported by artillery and Nigerian and Chadian aircraft. 2 x Chadians were killed and 10 injured. The enemy Amir was reportedly captured in the Shehu of DIKWA’s Palace, another commander ABU ASHSHE (a notorious cattle thief) was also reportedly killed along with 118 other gunmen, 4 x vehicles with explosives and 142 motorcycles were destroyed. Weapons and computers were also captured. The ANT also captured LOMANI and NDUWU Village and MELERI Village, major Boko Haram bases were attacked by air and artillery and then ground forces. The ANT then pushed onto KUSHIMORI Village, where Boko Haram kept stolen livestock

Camerounian forces supported by artillery and Chadian mercenary piloted aircraft attacked GOURGOUROON, on the NIGERIA/ CAMEROUN border (it is not clear which country it is in)

18 February

The US Ambassador to CAMEROUN Michael Stephen HOZA stated that the US Government is working on a ‘logistics pipeline of material’ to aid CAMEROUN’s ability to defend itself

The 3rd Session of the CAMEROUN-NIGERIA Border Security Committee began in Mount Febe Hotel, YAOUNDE, CAMEROUN. With the Nigerian delegation led by Maj Gen John B. SAMUEL and the Camerounian delegation by Minister of Territorial Administration and Decentralisation Rene Emmanuel SADI. The 3 day meeting will review maritime and land order issues and recommend solutions.

Camerounian NGO REDHAC accused Camerounian security forces of abuses, such as intimidation and torture in its campaign against Boko Haram

19 February

Col Mahamane SANI of NIGER Republic stated that the first commander of the new MJNTF would be a Nigerian and then command would rotate amongst member states

20 February

Gunmen mounted in pickup trucks and motorcycles attacked KARAMGA Village, DIFFA Prefecture, NIGER Republic in the vicinity of Lake CHAD around 9.00am inflicting 7 x dead, 4 x wounded and 5 x missing casualties on Nigerien forces, killing 1 x civilian, burning several properties and sustaining 15 x attackers. The Chadian military claims the attackers attempted to cross into CHAD across the lake but 5 x boats were destroyed by aircraft

Gunmen attacked MOHANAMBAL, BOSSO Commune, DIFFA Prefecture, NIGER Republic, killing 7 Nigerien soldiers

The US Government stated it had spent $24.7m on humanitarian relief for refugees and IDPS in NIGERIA, CAMEROUN, CHAD and NIGER

21 February

French Foreign Minister Laurent FABIUS visited Chadian President DEBY in N’DJAMENA, CHAD and then French troops in N’DJAMENA KOSSEI CAMEROUN and NIGER Republic.
