OP RESTORE ORDER SITREP- Week Ending 11 January 2014

Situation Friendly Forces:

5 January:

  • The NDLEA states it is yet to establish any links between drug barons and Boko Haram
  • Elements of 3 Brigade operating as part of the JTF detained a suspected IED maker in KAZAURE LGA, JIGAWA State after a dawn raid and firefight at his place of residence. 3 women and 3 toddlers suspected of being family members of the suspect were captured as well as 5 AK 47s, 5 magazines, 333 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition and several IEDs. He was allegedly planning attacks in KANO

10 January: The Nigerian military are to release 157 detainees in BORNO, 9 in YOBE and 1 in ADAMAWA in to the custody of their respective State governments

Situation Enemy Forces:

5 January:

  • Insurgents robbed and killed a man in BURATAI Village, BIU LGA, BORNO State. The gunmen took away his valuables and also stole a vehicle carrying tomatoes leaving the occupants unharmed

7 January: unknown gunmen attacked the District Head of MADUBI, Alhaji KWANWASO (father of KANO State Governor), at 8.00pm as he left the mosque in KWANKWASO Village, MADUBI LGA, KANO State. 3 persons were killed and 12 wounded

9 January:

  • Insurgents attacked a 195 Battalion base in DAMBOA with small arms, vehicle mounted weapons, IEDs at 1.00am. 38 insurgents were reportedly killed, along with 1 soldier and 2 others injured. Ammunition, machine guns 2 AK 47s and IEDs were reported captured and 2 cars and a truck were captured, loaded with food and IEDs. 7 Div troops are in pursuit supported by NAF aircraft
  • Approximately 30 insurgents attacked KAYAMULA Village, KONDUGA LGA, BORNO State at 2.00am with rifles and IED’s, killing 9 civilians and injuring an unspecified number, burning a shop and house in the village, they were repelled by elements of 7 Division supported by NAF aircraft and retreated into the Sambisa Forest with their dead and wounded. No reported friendly military casualties

10 January: gunmen burnt down a church and the house of a National Assembly member Peter BIYE (APC) in BZUBA Village along GWOZA-PULKA Road, GWOZA LGA, BORNO State, stealing over 70 domestic animals and burning some sorghum, exercise books, biros and chalk meant for distribution across the constituency

Situation External Forces:

8 January: Camerounian media reports that the Camerounian government paid Boko Haram a ransom of 7bn CFA Francs for the release of French Priest Georges VANDENBEUSCH
