OP RESTORE ORDER SITREP- Week Ending 12 October 2013

Situation Friendly Forces:

05 October: elements of 7 Division in a follow up to the attack on DAMBOA pursued insurgents to AJIGI and KAFA and killed 30 including an Amir of the sect

06 October:

  • Nigerien Soldiers of the MNJTF engaged suspected insurgents on some of the island communities near LAKE CHAD
  • Elements of 7 Div attacked insurgent camps in the vicinity of IZZA town, BORNO State, supported by air strikes. This was an intelligence led attack to deter an alleged plan to attack BAMA by the insurgents. The military state that 5 Toyota Hilux mounted with AAA guns and an 18 seater bus were destroyed. Aggressive operations continue along the MAIDUGURI-DAMATURU Road

08 October: Alhaji Kabiru TURAKI (Minister of Special Duties and Inter governmental Affairs) has stated they are in negotiations with ‘genuine elements’ of Boko Haram

09 October: Elements of 3 Brigade and the DSS attached to the JTF have discovered an IED factory in GUNDUWAWA Village, GEZAWA LGA, KANO State. Captured during the operation were 1 complete suicide back pack, 3 IEDs and 18 empty cylinders , 24 detonators, 3 remote controls, 1 unspecified assault rifle, 2 AK-47s, 58 magazines, 193 rounds of 5.56mm ammunition, 1 AK-47 magazine, 107 rounds of 7.62mm, fertilizer, cortex wires, 9V batteries, 6 alarm clocks, other bomb making equipment and bow and arrows.

10 October: several text messages are circulating KANO City stating that Boko Haram planned to attack the city on Tuesday and Wednesday with suicide bombers pretending to be women. The source and veracity of the texts are unknown

11 October: a combined Nigerian security forces team has rounded up several Boko Haram commanders and lower level operatives in RIGASA, KADUNA State over a number of days, who were reportedly behind several recent attacks in the state and were allegedly planning attacks in the town over the Sallah period

13 October:

  • Over 3,000 people from BAMA and GWOZA have fled to MADAGALI, ADAMAWA to escape insurgent attacks.
  • Relief materials are being distributed by NEMA in areas affected by the state of emergency such as MAIDUGURI, MARTE, BAGA, GWOZA, BAMA, GASHUA, DAMATURU, YOLA, MUBI and POTISKUM

Situation Enemy Forces:

08 October: Abubaker SHEKAU has appeared in a new video displaying vehicles and equipment allegedly captured from the Nigerian Security Forces by the insurgents.

06 October: suspected insurgents on motorcycles ambushed policemen on WESTERN BY-PASS, UNGWAN MUAZU, KADUNA killing one and taking his weapon

Suspected insurgents attacked GWOZA, BORNO State shooting a nurse and slitting the throat of a prison guard in GADAMAYO WARD near the General Hospital. The insurgents allegedly arrived on 2 motorcycles and a VW Golf at 4.45am and fled towards KURANA BASSA near the GWOZA HILLS. 3 other civilians were allegedly injured

8 October: insurgents attacked a village in GWOZA LGA killing 2 civilians, stealing 4 motorcycles and an unspecified amount of food and money

12 October: insurgents attacked MAJE Village in MAMUDO a town near POTISKUM, YOBE State around 9.35pm killing 4 civilians

Situation Other Forces:

07 October: Vigilantes from the Borno Vigilance Youth Group in conjunction with troops of 7 Div detained 20 suspected insurgents in the vicinity of DAMBOA and 5 others in 3 wards of MAIDUGURI (KASUWAN SHANU, GOMARI and ABAGANARAM). The detainees are in GIWA Barracks for interrogation.

Situation External Forces:

08 October: Cameroonian Gendarmes engaged suspected Boko Haram insurgents near the Nigerian border allegedly killing 180 after the insurgents allegedly ambushed and killed 2 Cameroonian Gendarmes. The Cameroonians state they have recovered over 200 rifles and 70 machine guns

    Fantastic sit reps as usual. Would love to see your analysis on the recent offshore Nigerian piracy incidents.

      Thanks for reading and the comments.
      Ironically the last trip to Nigeria was meant to be to the North East but ended up in the South West!
      We are trying to avoid an indepth article on the piracy/ militancy issue as there are very few military issues that we think are relevant, the solutions are all strategic/ political, but we intend to produce 2 or 3 articles on the on shore and off shore militancy (whilst being as diplomatic as possible!)
