OP RESTORE ORDER SITREP- Week Ending 14 September 2013

Situation Friendly Forces:

10 September: 10 insurgents killed after a combined air/ ground assault on 2 camps in the vicinity of MADA, KONDUGA LGA, BORNO State by elements of 231 Battalion, 7 Div . 1 solider was wounded in action. Following this action troops also made contact with fleeing insurgents along the MAIDUGURI- DAMBOA Road around 10.00pm. 4 AK-47’s, 5 AK-47 magazines and 250 rounds of  assorted ammunition.

12 September: Troops from 5 Brigade, 7 Division carried out an air/ ground assault on insurgent camps in the KAFIYA FOREST, NGANZAI LGA, BORNO State, from which insurgents where attacking the villages of FELO, GWAOI and MALAGARA.

The Nigeria Army claims that troops from 81 Battalion, 7 Division, carried out a deliberate attack on 2insurgent camps in the KAFIYA Forest, NGAZAI LGA, BORNO State along the BAGA- MAIDUGURI Road  killing approximately 150 insurgents with 16 friendly soldiers killed (1 Lieutenant and 15 other ranks) and 9 missing. The enemy camp was allegedly well fortified with vehicle mounted anti tank and anti aircraft weapons. Amongst the enemy dead was a High Value Target Abba GOROMA (who had a N10m bounty on him). Other reports attribute the attack to 134 Battalion, 12 Brigade and the insurgent camp to KANGARWA village

13 September: Troops operation from a FOB in BANKI (either from 202 Battalion in BAMA or on a task to them) engaged a group of robbers/ insurgents robbing travellers along the BANKI-BAMA Road. 3 civilians were killed by the robbers and an unspecified amount of cash and food seized. Insurgents had also allegedly attempted to extort N1m from traders in DIKWA LGA

Situation Enemy Forces:

11 September:  Approximately 20 insurgents in vehicles and motorcycles attacked a police station in GA’ANDA, ADAMAWA State around 9.00pm, using small arms, IEDs and RPGs, killing 2 police officers and wounding 1 other. The 2 hour attack resulted in a burnt police station and patrol vehicle. No reports of enemy casualties

12 September: unverified sources claim 40 soldiers killed and 65 missing in an ambush by insurgents. In an alleged ‘fog of war’ incident troops from 134 Battalion, 12 Brigade attached to the MNJTF based in KANGARWA village discovered an undiscovered insurgent base along the BAGA-MAIDUGURI Road. A ground assault was planned by 100 troops (i.e. a company attack) with air support. The preparatory air strikes were allegedly cancelled at the last minute leaving the troops to attack prepared positions unsupported. The Ministry of Defence disputes the casualty figures.

Situation Other Forces:

14 September: NPF kill a vigilante escorting a suspected Boko Haram member captured in BENISHEIK, to the SSS Offices in MAIDUGURI. The offending policeman was killed with clubs and machetes and youths demonstrated and blocked roads in protest.
